INTRO
Excited to introduce this thriller short project by Chinese filmmakers Tian Guan and Vivian Bao. They graduated from CalArts and are now emerging independent filmmakers. Notably, Tian Guan has also served as a programmer for LACFF and as a jury member for the CIE Creative Workshop.
This short film is inspired by an ancient Chinese folklore that tells the story of some women who, after marrying into remote villages, transform into evil creatures and consume their husbands.
This folklore truly reflects the inner anger of oppressed women and are amazed by their primal and powerful spirit resistance. With elements of dark humor and suspense, the shot film wants to depict man’s deep-rooted fear of losing power within the context of women’s empowerment, a fear that ultimately consumes him!
THE STORY
Draft Design of the Poison Cat
Deep within the mountains, men from a village continue to mysteriously disappear in the forest. It's rumored that they were the victims of the legendary evil spirit, the "Poison Cat." Hunter Abitai doesn't believe in the legend, but he uses it to threat and rein in his wife. However, her tough and creepy response, which he has never seen from her, sends shivers down his spine. It isn't until night falls that he awakens from a dream, astonished to find his wife and all the village women have inexplicably vanished. In his panic, Abitai spots a trail of eerie footprints on the ground. Clutching his hunting rifle, he tentatively follows the prints into the depths of the terrifying, dark forest…
The "Poison Cat" precisely symbolizes the suppressed pain and erupting anger within the wives.
