The Los Angeles China Mixer was started by Lewis Liu on September 8th, 2016 at the Beer Belly in Koreatown, Los Angeles as an informal gathering for Chinese and Chinese-American young professionals working in Hollywood to meet and connect with each other. Through words of mouth, the event soon got a lot of attention on social media and 50+ people showed up. Among the attendees, composer Mark Liu and marketing executive Athena Bowe offered to help turn the mixer into a monthly networking event.
The mixer is usually hosted at a different venue in the greater Los Angeles area every month, and former mixer venues include Paddle Room, The Roof on Wilshire, The Prince, Escala Ktown, Angel City Brewery, Father’s Office, Spice Affair Beverly Hills, Lobster & Beer, Seven Bar Lounge, Baldoria, Enterprise Fish Co, Monkey Bar, Bank of Venice, Idle Hour, Paper Tiger Bar, Roofdeck Lounge at Moment Hotel, Broadway Bar, Solidarity Restaurant, Next Republic Artisan Kitchen, 33 Taps Silver Lake, The Wellsbourne, No More Heroes Cocktail Bar, Li Orient Asian Bar & Restaurant, Songbird Cafe, Santa Monica Playhouse, The Mixx Pasadena, The Federal Bar, Busby’s West, Beer Belly, Hotel Indigo, Pink Taco, APT 503 Lounge, Peking Tavern and Edendale Bar& grille.
Development
In June 2017, the founders of the mixer also started an annual event - the Los Angeles Chinese Film Festival and in July 2017, they officially registered Chinese in Entertainment as a non-profit organization and started accepting donations. in September 2017, Hooch comes on board as an official sponsor of the Los Angeles China Mixer and started a long term strategic partnership with Chinese in Entertainment. Currently, Hooch still provides a $1 cocktail special to attendees of the Los Angeles China Mixer and the promotional code for the discount is LACFF.
Chinese in Entertainment has also co-hosted numerous mixers, screenings and networking events with other non-profit organizations and professional institutions including Coalitions of Asian Americans in Entertainment, Visual Communications, AZNs in Entertainment, Asia Society Southern California, China Film Insider, China Hollywood Society, Asian World Film Festival, AIB Sportsbrands Studio, Final Draft and OnePiece.

The Los Angeles China Mixer has recently celebrated its 35th edition and continued to grow and nurture a community of students, filmmakers and industry professionals. Attendees of the mixer usually consist of 1/3 Chinese nationals that are part of the Chinese diaspora in Southern California, 1/3 Asian-Americans and 1/3 other Americans who have interests in working with China. Today there is an average of 60-100 attendees going to the monthly event, and it has become a lot of young professionals’ first stop in Hollywood.
The Los Angeles China Mixer has always been a friendly and welcoming space that celebrates diversity and inclusivity. Up till now, the event has always been free of charge and open to the public. However, attendees are highly encouraged to RSVP for staffing purpose.
