Chinese in Entertainment (parent organization to LACFF and Sino-Screen) welcomes people of all backgrounds to join as volunteers. Anyone interested in Chinese culture and the entertainment and media industries is welcome. *Please see below for detailed team descriptions and find out the one for you!

Why Join?

Volunteer benefits include invites and complimentary ticket to all of our events. The amount of complimentary tickets to our events is determined by volunteer hours contributed.

Organizing team members also get the opportunity to engage as leaders of the CIE community, and represent CIE when conducting interviews or organizing events with industry experts.

Operations & Strategy

The Operations Team is in charge of the administration functionality of the organization. Including:

  • Talent / HR: volunteer recruitment and management, orientation, training, internal development, internal team-building, benefits, title, internal training, motivation.   

  • Legal affairs: legal documents, agreements (volunteer agreement, internship agreement, etc.)

  • Logistics: email (team accounts) purchase and management, meeting minutes taking, material preparation, on-site coordination and personnel management.

What we are looking for:

  • Individuals who are detail oriented and highly organized

  • Individuals who are familiar with online tools, applications and softwares such as Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Eventbrite and Zoom

  • Skills in typing, experienced or interested in meeting note taking (both English and Chinese)

  • Skills in scheduling, writing emails, communicating and coordinating

  • Skills in bookkeeping

Business Development

The Business Development Team is responsible for all business negotiations on behalf of the organization, including sponsorship (monetary & in-kind) and partnership outreach, and closing; in charge of the tax, budgeting, legal affairs, financial review and analysis on both the organization and event levels. Our team entails tasks and processes to develop and implement growth opportunities within our organization. We hope you can help us highlight our organization’s impacts on the entertainment community and past achievements to our partners and sponsors.

What we are looking for: 

  • Individuals with a background or interest in business, finance, law or dealmaking. 

  • Individuals who are experienced or interested in sponsorship or partnership outreach and management.

  • Individuals that are team players and not shy on reaching out to people.

Marketing & PR

The Marketing & PR Team is seeking passionate marketers and designers, who are also film enthusiasts, to strategize and execute upcoming campaigns. Volunteers will gain exposure to and participate in digital marketing, graphic design, events execution, email campaigns, partner negotiation, etc. You will also have the chance to closely work with other CIE teams and network with industry professionals. Experience in graphic design or entertainment is a plus.

Positions & Responsibilities

Social Media Coordinator (one Native English Speaker needed!)

  • Qualifications

    • Excellent English or Chinese written interpersonal skills

    • Passionate and eager to learn about digital marketing

  • Responsibilities

    • Creating interactive content for social media platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, WeChat, Weibo, and Twitter

    • Strategize film-related social media campaigns monthly

    • Monitoring social data and other key performance indicators.

PR and Partnership Specialists

  • Qualifications

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Excellent relationship-building skills

  • Responsibilities

    • Expand, build, and develop relationships with organization partners, and entertainment talents.

    • Reach out to media/nonprofit organizations/companies and prepare press materials; maintain and update media lists

    • Responsible for the copywriting and strategic planning of newsletter

Branding Coordinators

  • Qualifications

    • Excellent organization, communication, and execution skills

  • Responsibilities

    • Responsible for daily maintenance of CIE’s official website

    • Research competitive organizations’ programs to suggest recommendations to our current brands 

    • Launch new marketing initiatives to gain more exposure

Graphic Designers

    • Familiarity with design tools

    • Ability to conceptualize and present on-brand ideas

    • Elevating the brand and aesthetic through innovative visual concepts and design

PRogramming

The Programming Team is responsible for the curation of the Los Angeles Chinese Film Festival (LACFF) - bringing the best Chinese language or ethnically Chinese directed films to Los Angeles. In light of COVID, LACFF has decided to curate thematic virtual screenings for the 2020-2021 season, so far including an LGBTQ short film screening and a LACFF retrospective program. We are excited to bring more thought-provoking and exciting film screenings and discussions in 2021 while better preparing us for an in-person festival in 2022.   

The programming team’s duties include: curating film programs, creating written content for the program, contacting filmmakers/distributors, managing screenings, finding and contacting guest speakers, as well as hosting, translating, and documenting the events.

 What we are looking for:

  • Amateur/Professionals in the film/entertainment industry that are interested in participating in promoting outstanding films.

  • Students who are pursuing a degree in film studies, Asian studies, communication or other majors related to filmmaking.

  • People with experience in event hosting or/and English-Mandarin interpretation.

  • Cinephiles, especially those interested in writing about, curating, discussing, and discovering Chinese language films and films made by ethnically Chinese filmmakers.

  • From a fine arts or graphic design background, especially those who are interested in designing posters and/or marketing brochures.

  • People with experience in social media, website management, who can help us with updating and marketing our website and social media like YouTube channel.

  • People with experience in editing trailers and/or promotional pieces. 

  • Good at networking and PR, knows how to negotiate/communicate with people and organizations in different fields.

Development

The Development Team strives to support the development of creative talents who have an interest in telling Chinese heritage-related stories in the global entertainment industry by offering various programs dedicated to improving their odds of success in the entertainment industry. Current programs include monthly events like the China Mixers, The Speaker Series, Writers’ Workshop, and the annual LACFF Screenwriting Competition.  

Positions & Responsibilities:

Event Coordinators

Work responsibilities:

  • Facilitate Project Managers on preliminary preparation and execution of CIE feature programs.

  • Communicate with internal team members and external industry resources to facilitate the events.

  • Manage the daily operations of feature programs and talent communities. 

What we are looking for:

  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).

  • Knowledge and experience in social media and marketing strategies.

  • Interested in initiating and organizing big-scale events. Experienced or newbies are all welcome!

  • Willing to take on responsibilities.

  • Fluent English speaker.

  • Hosting skills and experiences would be preferred. 

  • Bilingual (English and Mandarin) skills would be preferred.

Bilingual Copywriting Specialist

Work responsibilities:

  • Compile promotional materials for CIE feature programs on Wechat, Instagram and Facebook

  • Proofread important documents and articles for outreach and public use.

What we are looking for:

  • Experience in writing promotional materials on different platforms.

  • Strong Chinese and English writing skills.

  • Willing to take on responsibilities.

  • Fluent English speaker.

  • Experience in writing business proposals would be a plus.

Content

The Content Team is a division of Chinese in Entertainment, responsible for managing Sino-Screen, a digital media publication that curates news, opinions, and podcasts about the global entertainment industry, with a focus on the Sinosphere. Sino-Screen aims to share knowledge from Hollywood insiders as well as sinophiles and cinephiles.

Writer: Journalist / film critic/ entertainment industry analyst

What we are looking for:

  • Social Media Coordinator

    • You live and breathe social media, and pay attention to film/entertainment-related industry news and social influencers

    • Fluent in both Mandarin Chinese and English

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, possessing basic knowledge of content editing  

    • A deep understanding and obsession with both American and Chinese social platforms including Wechat, Douban, Medium, Matters, Zhihu, Facebook, Youtube and so on

    • Ability to create publication schedules for multiple platforms

    • Experience in managing social media accounts is a plus

  •  Podcast Producer

    • Proficiency in audio editing

    • Familiar with major podcast platforms such as Spotify, ApplePodcast, GooglePodcast, SoundCloud, Podbean and Ximalaya

    • Ability to write interview outline and edit character-driven narrative

    • Eagerness to take direction and grow in the position

    • Experience in managing a podcast account is a plus

  •  Writer: Journalist / film critic / entertainment industry analyst

    • Excellent Chinese written skills

    • Passion for creating entertainment-related, original articles

    • Previous publication of written content is preferred

    • Extensive knowledge of film theory or industrial insights is a plus
